Battle of Atlantic
written by carter
The Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted from September 1939 until the defeat of Germany in 1945, was the war’s longest continuous military campaign. The battle was between major Allied powers like the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, Italy(1940-43).
Britain (and the Soviet Union) NEEDED supplies. Germany was attacking the supply ships . Getting those supply ships through to Britain was the Battle of the Atlantic; if the battle was lost, then Britain might not be saved.
During six years of naval warfare, German U-boats and warships – and later Italian submarines – were pitted against Allied convoys transporting military equipment and supplies across the Atlantic to Great Britain and the Soviet Union.
September 5, 1939: The Bosnia becomes the first merchantman to be sunk by the German U-boats.
September 6, 1939: 36 Allied ships set out across the Atlantic in the first coordinated convoy crossing attempt.
April 10, 1941: The first US combat action against Germany occurs.
February 1, 1943: A presidential directive calls for about 250 American aircraft to begin offensive actions in the Atlantic.
May 1, 1945: The U-boat scourge in the Atlantic is over, completing one of the more important battle in all WW2.
